Cargill Meat Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Cargill Inc., has settled race and sex discrimination charges with the federal government. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs investigated the firm’s hiring practices at facilities in Springdale, Ark., Fort Morgan, Colo., and Beardstown, Ill., between 2005 and 2009. Investigators concluded the company discriminated against women at Springdale and Fort Morgan, white and Hispanic applicants at Fort Morgan and blacks and whites at Beardstown.
The practices violate Executive Order 11246, which bars federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of race or sex.
Under the settlement, the company will pay $2,236,218 in back wages and interest to 2,959 applicants who were rejected for jobs at the facilities. The company will also extend job offers to 354 rejected applicants as openings become available.
Note: Companies working on federal contracts face an additional layer of scrutiny. All the more reason to police hiring practices proactively before federal investigators arrive.
