Maybe it wasn’t Andrew Mason’s antics while CEO of Groupon that got him fired. But he sure gave investors pause.

  • He blamed his incoherence one time on “too much beer.”
  • He almost gave Michael Bloomberg a pony as a gift, only to find out that the New York mayor’s daughter had been in a riding accident.
  • He ran Super Bowl ads that seemed to mock the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the destruction of rainforests.
  • He once thought it funny to answer interview questions with a frozen stare. When asked why he’d rejected a $6 billion offer from Google (Groupon is now worth about half that), the joke was on him.

And then the joke was on him. In March, he told employees he was leaving to spend more time with his family, then quipped: “Just kidding. I was fired today. If you’re wondering why … you haven’t been paying attention.”
