The advent of smartphones, tablets and social media keep you connected, but they also create distractions that hinder your efficiency. Try these tricks to improve productivity.

•  Download distraction-free programs. If you struggle to stay on task, consider downloading a distraction-blocking web browser or word processor to keep you from playing games or surfing the web. A few possibilities: LeechBlock, FocusMe, BinarySwitch Eclipse, FocalFilter.

•  Silence the social media. Ignoring Facebook, Google+, Twitter and others can be tough, but sometimes you have to do it. Turn off push notifications and disable automatic email updates tied to social networks.

•  Filter out low-priority emails. Obsessive inbox checking can cause you to lose your train of thought. Figure out what’s important, and then set up an automatic filtering system that ensures you receive email only when necessary.
