Employers offering more flexibility on when work happens, less on how much

Employers are increasing employees’ options for managing when and where they work, while reducing some options that affect how much they work, according a new study.

Researchers at the Families and Work Institute (FWI) found that more employers are allowing their workers to:

  • Take time off during the workday to attend to important family or personal needs without loss of pay (87%)
  • Use flextime and periodically change starting and quitting times (77%)
  • Occasionally work some of their regular paid hours at home (63%).

However, opportunities to work a reduced schedule or take extended breaks from work have declined. Significant decreases were found in employers allowing at least some of their employees to:

  • Return to work gradually after childbirth or adoption
  • Take a career break for personal or family responsibilities
  • Transition into part-time work while maintaining the same position or pay grade.

All were less common than when the FWI studied flex arrangements in 2005. The research was conducted with support from the Society for Human Resource Management.
