A March evening started out great for a waiter at the Angus Barn restaurant in Raleigh. One of his customers was NFL quarterback and well-known big tipper Peyton Manning. Manning apparently had a great time, too. He left a $200 tip on top of an 18% gratuity that had already been added to his check.
The waiter was so excited, he whipped out his cellphone, took a picture of the credit card slip and posted it to his Facebook wall.
Bad move. That violated Angus Barn’s policy of keeping customers’ tipping habits confidential, not to mention revealing their credit card information. The restaurant fired him.
“This goes against every policy we have. It’s just horrible,” Angus Barn owner Van Eure told the Triangle Business Journal.
Other Raleigh restaurateurs agreed the firing was justified. One told NBC-17 that protecting customers’ privacy is one reason his company prohibits servers from carrying electronic devices such as phones during their shifts. He said he would cite the Manning incident when training employees about the policy.
