The highest-earning taxpayers are paying a hefty tax load, but not quite as much as they did before.

According to the latest IRS statistics, the top 1% of all filers paid 36.7% of the entire federal income tax burden in 2009, down from 38% in 2008. (IRS Statistics of Income Division, July 2011) The top 1% of filers in 2009 included taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of at least $343,927.
