Fortune magazine has rated Cary-based software design firm SAS the nation’s best employer. SAS shot up from 20th place on last year’s version of the annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list.

What makes SAS such a good employer? It offers workers a wide variety of high-quality benefits: inexpensive child care, unlimited sick days and an on-site medical clinic that provides free care. The company pays 90% of employee health premiums.

SAS’ campus includes a 66,000-square-foot fitness center and pool, and it sponsors a free summer camp for employees’ children. Turnover is the lowest in the software industry, just 2%.

Another Cary company, engineering consultancy Kimley-Horn, placed 62nd on the list—largely because of the humane way in which it handled a big layoff.
