Gov. David Paterson has issued an executive order providing state employees with protection from discrimination because of their transgender status.

The move is one step ahead of the state Legislature. Bills currently circulating in Albany would cover both public and private employers. The New York State Assembly has passed legislation barring discrimination based on gender identity and expression, but the state senate has not.

The governor’s executive order applies only to state government employees.

Several cities throughout the state—including Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and New York City—already have ordinances protecting transgendered people.
