Gov. Ted Strickland has expanded unemployment compensation to displaced workers who are attending school. Under the new plan, unemployed workers who are full-time students need not actively seek a job in order to receive UC benefits.

Previously, only workers enrolled in bona fide training programs were exempt from the “actively seeking work” requirement.

The state program is designed to dovetail with a federal program that gives workers receiving unemployment special consideration when they apply for financial aid, such as need-based Pell grants.

Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Director Doug Lumpkin has sent letters to unemployment compensation recipients outlining their rights and financial aid options.
