Sometimes it’s best to scrap the metrics and go with your gut—even in the stats-happy world of professional sports. So far, the Minnesota Vikings are glad they did.

Bizjournals, the online presence of American City Business Journals, ranked all 36 NFL quarterbacks who threw at least 160 passes during the 2008 season to see who delivered the most bang for the buck. The study rated each quarterback’s completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions relative to their pay.

In 2008, while playing for the New York Jets, Vikings QB Brett Favre placed 34th out the 36 quarterbacks rated. In return for $12 million, he threw 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Given Favre’s remarkable season thus far with the Vikings, it’s probably a good thing they didn’t pay any attention to the Bizjournals’ survey before signing him.

Not factored into the Bizjournals’ equation:
Brett Favre jerseys have been the NFL’s best-selling merchandise for months, driving significant revenue for the league and the Vikings, according to a report on CNBC’s Sportsbiz blog.
