Health insurance: Employees to pay higher portion of health benefits

Premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance rose to an average $13,375 annually for family coverage this year, and employers are likely to pass even more of the cost to employees next year, according to a benchmark survey of employers released in September.

Researchers with the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust, which published the 2009 Employer Health Benefits Survey, found that employees currently pay $3,515 of the average premium, while employers pay $9,860.

Among employers offering benefits, 21% reported they had already reduced the scope of health benefits or increased cost sharing due to the economic downturn, and 15% reported they increased the share of premiums workers must pay.

When asked about their plans for next year, 21% of employers said they are “very likely” to raise workers’ premium contributions.
