The metropolitan area encompassing North Carolina suburbs of the Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Hampton Roads region is the most centralized large employment center in the nation.

So says a Brookings Institution report titled “Job Sprawl Revisited: The Changing Geography of Metropolitan Employment,” which scores how jobs are distributed within metropolitan areas. High rankings go to areas where jobs are concentrated in city centers, allowing for better commuting and land use.

The Tidewater region topped the charts with 36.4% of its jobs within three miles of the urban core.

The report identified Detroit as the most sprawling job market, where 77.4% of jobs are more than 10 miles away from the city center.
