Q. Some of our admin assistants are good employees, but they’re constantly late. What can we do to get them to come to work on time?

A. Do you have a written policy stating when employees are to show up? Do you have an attendance policy that explains the consequences of being late? If not, you should publish the requirements to all employees. If employees continue to arrive late, then you can start to discipline them.

You should document each tardy occurrence and the form of discipline given. For example, after the first occurrence, you might give the employee a written warning with notice that any further occurrences could lead to further discipline, up to and including termination.

As with any form of discipline, you should make sure that you treat employees consistently. In other words, you should not terminate one employee for being late five times, but only give a written warning to another employee who is late five times, absent extenuating circumstances.
