Paul Lesko was contrite when he appeared in Cumberland County court for sentencing following his conviction of embezzlement. While working for Westy Beer Distributor in Hampden Township, Lesko had taken more than $7,625 from owner James Yaple.

In court, a tearful Lesko apologized, telling Yaple that his crime had cost him his job, his savings and his self-respect. Lesko had already made restitution and was sentenced to 23 months’ probation.

Advice: Always have two sets of eyes on the books and the cash. It’s not a foolproof deterrent to embezzlement, but it makes it much harder: An employee bent on thievery will have to recruit an accomplice instead of acting alone.
