Board members: It’s all in the dance

In case you have any trouble explaining your role as a board member, here’s a metaphor you can use.

The board helps set—and set into motion—the organization’s aims, identity and direction. It’s like standing on a balcony above a dance floor, watching the big picture and directing the dance. Collectively, the board disciplines itself to stay on the balcony instead of joining the bandleader (the CEO) on the stage or the dancers below.

It would be tempting to join the dance and feel the rush of accomplishment, but from the dance floor you can easily lose sight of the group’s larger purpose and direction.
