Create and share ‘aha’ moments

A “golden nugget” moment is a learning moment that happens outside the classroom. Like when you first discovered how air pressure works by putting your finger on top of a water-filled straw to trap the liquid.

If you’re a manager, spawn more golden nugget moments for your team by creating informal learning opportunities: mentoring, on-the-job training, brainstorming and good, old-fashioned trial-and-error. Encourage employees to tap into blogs, discussion forums and wikis.

Next, ask team members to share what they’ve learned by setting aside time at weekly meetings.

Finally, make learning visible. Put it on the company intranet, on a wiki or in an e-newsletter.

Promoting “golden nuggets” inspires and motivates others on the spot, without the fuss of formal training.
