Starting in July, Ohio employers will get their choice of five deductible levels on their workers’ compensation insurance. In exchange for lower premiums, employers will assume a larger risk for workplace accidents.

Deductibles will start at $500 and range up to $10,000 for each claim. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) says the five deductible levels are just a starting point. In future years, employers will see other deductible levels and corresponding premiums.

The BWC is also putting premium caps in place. A commission representative said it fears workers’ compensation premium volatility scares employers away from the state and makes it more difficult for Ohio employers to plan expenses.
