At Martin Marietta Materials, 300 employees were laid off from the gravel and rock supplier in 2008. Caterpillar, the heavy equipment company, used temporary layoffs to cut costs. Cisco Systems, the global information technology company, did a holiday shutdown in late 2008 to save money.
