Although it’s easy to overlook, common courtesy toward employees is a sure way to increase morale and create an environment of respect.

Donald Graham, long before he became publisher of The Washington Post, helped re-establish peace in the pressroom after a bitter strike simply because of his warmth and consistent presence. The visits he made to workers’ desks communicated his respect for the value of their efforts.

Coming out of the office and interacting with employees on an even plane (instead of always receiving them from a place of power behind your desk) lets them see the group as a cohesive whole.

Employees appreciate an executive who lacks pomposity and who can be informal and friendly when the situation permits.
In short: ‘‘Niceness’’ counts.
