Piling on the election-year confessional bandwagon was Verizon Wireless, which admitted in November that company employees snuck a peek at the personal cell phone records of President-elect Barack Obama.

In its defense, Verizon noted that it was an old account, and just a flip phone, with no e-mail.

Amid ongoing spy reports, the Ohio House of Representatives approved a bill in December designed to safeguard taxpayers’ personal data. The bill would require state agencies to determine which employees have access to sensitive personal information, require valid reasons for accessing it and track when data are accessed.
