The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth notified more than 40,000 businesses that they will pay higher unemployment insurance taxes in January.

In the first unemployment tax increase since 1982, affected employers will pay $67.50 more per employee in 2009.

The revenues will repay recent loans from the federal government that have kept the fund solvent.

Businesses that have paid in less than their employees have collected from the fund will owe the additional tax.
