When you find out that you didn’t get the raise, promotion or assignment that you wanted, the way you respond will influence how higher-ups measure your worth.

If you curse, stammer, sulk or storm away, you’ll blow a chance to show your maturity. Shift your focus to new challenges. Say, “That’s disappointing. Looking ahead, I’d like to shoot for some stretch goals and get rewarded proportionally.” Then propose bonus pay or other benefits if you can exceed your supervisor’s expectations over the next month or quarter. Remember: This is the ideal moment to extract concessions or promises from your boss for upcoming work.
