Q: I run community outreach for my company. In many cases, I’m the guy who gives an over-sized check to a charity’s executive director as people snap photos. I’m often expected a say a few words, but I hate it. So I usually mumble something and rush away from the mike. How can I improve?

A: Change! Learn to love your 15 minutes of fame. Enroll in Toastmasters or a public speaking course so that you build confidence. Prepare a core speech that describes your company’s generous spirit or commitment to the community. Then customize it for each appearance.
