You’ve probably seen surveys indicating that many employees are motivated by job satisfaction more than money. So you adopt the “do what you love” philosophy: You make job fulfillment your No. 1 goal in deciding whether to take a promotion.

Big mistake. Choose money and responsibility over job satisfaction. Why? If you always settle for what satisfies you, you might never venture out of your comfort zone to develop new skills.

Once you earn a bigger paycheck, you instantly command greater respect and operate on a more visible stage. And who knows? You might also love your new assignment.

We’re not suggesting that you take a job you loathe, of course, but treat increases in pay and responsibility as the two factors that dictate whether you accept a promotion.
