My neighbor got a mangy old dog, Jake, from a shelter. The poor thing had been abused. Now Jake cringes whenever anyone walks in the room. The dog looks up, sees someone coming and expects to be hit.

I know employees like that. They’re always cringing when I stop by, sad and cowering, eyes full of fear. They’re pathetic.

OK, I’m exaggerating. But some folks do carry themselves like victims. When you look at them, they look away. When you ask a simple question, they start apologizing, not answering. If you talk business, they fall all over themselves with embarrassment because they didn’t contribute more, make more progress, give more evidence, whatever.

Get a grip

If you think you’re worthless, you’ll convince yourself your strengths are really weaknesses. You’ll sabotage yourself at every turn.
