When you discover an employee made a mistake, don’t blow up just because it’s particularly costly. Instead, calibrate your response based on whether it’s a first-time or a repeat blunder. For first-time slip-ups, say, “Being wrong is acceptable, but staying wrong is unacceptable.” Consider disciplinary steps only if the individual fails to learn from the past.
