Your employer assigns you a mentor. This person’s supposed to give you guidance, offer feedback and serve as your ally. Sounds great, but make sure this individual truly wants to do it. Some mentors accept the task reluctantly.

At the first meeting, say, “I appreciate your help. How did you wind up doing this?” You want to hear, “I thought I could make a difference,” “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do” or “I think I’ll get as much out of it as you.” But if you hear, “I was assigned” or “Your guess is as good as mine,” give it a shot but don’t expect much.
