You go all out to impress, but your efforts go for naught if you devote too much time to pleasing the wrong people.

Be especially cautious when managing a team project. You assume you know your real “customer”—the executive in charge of it. You win over this VIP. Only then do you learn that the senior executive who wields the real influence never wanted the project and doesn’t approve of your work. You’re sunk.

Solution: Identify from the start who’s going to judge your performance. Hold preliminary meetings with a range of higher-ups, gauging their interest and how they’ll measure your progress. Also keep your immediate boss posted every step of the way.
