By encouraging healthful changes, from eating better to exercising, you can reduce your employees’ sick days, raise morale and cut workers’ comp and health insurance bills.

Take these steps:

Break up the day. Lead gentle stretching exercises during breaks. Also train workers to practice stretches while sitting at their desks.

Promote peer pressure. Suggest that employees keep a log of their physical fitness, including how much time they’ve exercised. Hold weekly meetings so they can share results. They’ll inspire each other and create healthy competition.

Provide free food. Just make sure it’s nutritious. Offer whole-grain breads and bagels with low-fat cream cheese, and keep fruit baskets filled. Make a ritual of hosting a “healthy breakfast day” every Monday.

Set an example. Show that you treat wellness seriously and employees may follow your lead. Walk regularly during lunch. Bike to work or park farther from the entrance and hoof it. Use the stairs.

Organize sports. Assemble a softball or volleyball team and invite everybody to participate. Aside from the exercise, such events promote teamwork.
