Request agreement in writing. After you advise an employee to change his behavior or adopt new work habits—and he agrees—don’t just walk away. Many managers find that even after striking an agreement, the worker backslides. Reduce that risk by asking him to write up the terms, sign them and submit them to you in two days. If you fear that will never happen, write the memo yourself, and have him sign it right after your conversation.
