You take an employee aside during a break in a meeting and alert him that his remarks were unacceptable. Stop there. Some managers get nervous disciplining employees, so they repeat themselves.

Use the fewest words possible to describe the inappropriate behavior. Then let the employee chime in. After hearing him out, define acceptable standards, pinpoint how his remarks fell below those standards and express faith that he’ll improve.
