Learn from Debby’s blunders to apply business turnaround strategies to your own career.

We’re talking about Debby Hopkins, who had nabbed the No. 2 position on Fortune’s list of the Most Powerful Women in Business before she was dumped as CFO of Lucent Technologies after only one year on the job. Her three mistakes:

1. She didn’t do her homework and met only with the CEO before taking the job. His board-induced departure six months later left her dangling.

2. Although she was bold and decisive, she failed to listen to others and wasn’t considered a team player.

3. Her timing was off. Even though she never hid her ambition to be CEO of a Fortune 500 company, wanting a “bigger job than finance chief” didn’t play well with the new Lucent CEO.
