A short fuse can kill a career. If you can’t control your temper, don’t think you can excuse yourself because you’re “under pressure” or “only shouting at people who deserve it.” Explosions will convince the brass you lack mettle. Solution: Fear triggers outbursts, so identify what you’re scared of (making mistakes, looking stupid, letting down a boss, squandering your best years in a dead-end job). The next time you feel like blowing up, remind yourself about what you fear and address it. Example: If you’re afraid of being wrong and an employee gives you faulty data, accept that no one’s always right, then help him correct his shortcoming. And work together to find accurate info.
