Q: I hope to get promoted. But our top executives are health nuts. I smoke and have a bit of a beer belly. This may sound silly, but I fear my bosses will look down on me for not looking like one of them. Should I be worried?

A: You have three reasons for concern. 1. Image shouldn’t matter in the workplace—but it does. That’s why the top corporate ranks are filled with “beautiful people.” 2. Many CEOs view a healthy way of life as one sign of a balanced person, a leader who practices self-control. If they value that quality in themselves, they’ll probably look for it in their peers. 3. You should quit smoking and shape up for your own sake. Even if you don’t shed lots of pounds, you’ll feel healthier and stronger. Plus, you’ll show those top execs that they’ve influenced you.
