One of the most overlooked causes of workplace stress is that managers get pelted by too much information. A recent survey by Pitney Bowes found that employees handle an average of 204 messages a day, including e-mail, voice mail and incoming paperwork. Stem the flow of data. How? Ask co-workers and employees to list multiple requests or inquiries in one message rather than send them piecemeal. Remove yourself from nonessential routing lists. And ask callers to specify what they need by what time so that you can prioritize your voice mail and follow through efficiently.
