Rather than flaunting the privileges that come with power, flaunt the fact that you don’t have a “what’s in it for me” mentality. Follow the lead of chief executive A.G. Lafley.

When Lafley took control over Procter & Gamble, he tore down the oak-paneled walls in the executive suite and donated the 19th century oil paintings to a local art museum. Then he moved himself and his top brass into cubicles, taking up only half of the original space and turning the remaining square footage into an employee learning center.

With these symbolic changes, Lafley showed P&G’s workforce that he was a different kind of leader.
