Alan Greenspan owes a lot of his success to an overriding thirst for knowledge and data.

During his 18-year tenure as Federal Reserve chairman, Greenspan had his staff scour all sources for every shred of economic data available: the gross national products of foreign nations, industrial productivity figures, labor costs … everything.

“Knowledge is like peanuts,” he told one interviewer. “Once you start eating it, you cannot stop.”

Lesson: A passionate love of information can cement your position at the top.
