Bernie Sanders, the independent congressman running for an open Senate seat in Vermont, certainly holds unconventional—some would say career-killing—views as a democratic socialist. But the voters keep sending him back to Washington because of these three traits:
  1. He takes strong stands and sticks to them. People who say they trust politicians the least support him the most. When he marches in a July 4th parade, onlookers shout “Give ’em hell, Bernie!”

  2. He respects people. Every year, in tiny Vermont towns, Sanders holds single-issue public meetings and brings in experts on pocketbook issues such as health care. Voters associate him with serious discussions that don’t insult their intelligence.

  3. He finds allies. Because he’s genuine, opponents know they can count on him to help them accomplish something whenever they do agree, even if it’s only 2 percent of the time.
Lesson: Don’t say it, or do it, unless you mean it. Then, you can shout it from the rafters and people will believe you.
