Many leaders are so busy with daily tasks that they fail to keep abreast of industry events and trends. Use these three tactics to keep that from happening to you:
  1. Infuse research into your routine by scheduling regular times to investigate new trends. Example: Set aside 20 minutes each week to contact customers.

  2. Use daily experiences to collect information. Example: While shopping, watch for ideas on packaging and product inventory. Carry a notebook to track what you find.

  3. Investigate competitors by setting aside regular times to visit their Web sites or locations.
