Singer and artist Tony Bennett counted many musicians among his friends and advisors, including fellow crooner Frank Sinatra, whom Bennett considered his mentor.

But it was bandleader Count Basie who advised against caving in to pressure from a record company that wanted Bennett to add rock music to his act.

Yes, rock music.

Bennett had a good thing going and should stay true to himself, Basie said. “Why change an apple?” he asked.
