A report released by a regional accrediting agency showed that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University even though he earned only 15 of the required 28 credits for the degree.

Two university deans stepped down following the revelation, with the understanding that “removal from administrative positions was the alternative,” the report by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools said.

Monroe said he had sought “no special favors or exceptions” from the university. He will keep the degree, as Virginia Commonwealth permits revoking a degree only on the grounds of academic misconduct.
