Your boss discovers that you’ve posted your résumé on an Internet job-search site:


“I’m sure you were surprised. You know I’m happy here. But no matter how much I love my job, I always like to explore what else is out there.”


Your employee defends a violation of company policy by saying “I didn’t know that was wrong”:


“I understand, but that doesn’t excuse you. If you were to tell that to a police officer, you’d still get a ticket. Now that we’ve gone over it and I’ve added this incident to your file, we can learn from it and move on.”


You confront an employee who makes yet another careless, costly mistake:


“We’ve discussed this on three occasions, and each time you’ve assured me you would fix this so it didn’t happen again. Everyone is human, and I tolerate mistakes—to a point. We’ve reached that point. I hope there’s no next time but, if there is, you’ll be put on probation.”


You want to disagree with your boss’s comments in front of both the boss and the CEO:


I see how that makes sense, but I have a different take on it based on my experience. Would you like me to elaborate?”
