Q. What’s the best way to make my boss aware of a colleague’s shoddy work? My boss seems oblivious, and it’s affecting my job.

A. The big question is why your boss doesn’t seem to care. Maybe your colleague brings certain strengths to the job that you don’t see. Or maybe the boss has quietly given up. In any case, talk first with your colleague and tactfully point out ways to improve performance. If that doesn’t work, let your boss know how your colleague’s work affects your productivity. But don’t just criticize from a safe distance. Take responsibility and ask how you can contribute to a solution.
