Question: Is it ever a good thing to bring your preschool or elementary school kids to the office?

Answer: It depends partly on why you brought them. If it’s merely because a child care arrangement fell through, then it’s probably a bad idea. Coworkers may end up feeling distracted and resentful.

On the other hand, if your motive is to show your children what “work” is like, a well-planned visit to the office can be a good learning experience, says Ellen Galinsky, president of the Families and Work Institute. Seeing you at work can satisfy your child’s curiosity about what you do when you’re not at home.

Either way, plan any visit in advance:

• Get your boss’s permission, and ask co-workers how they will feel about it.

• Keep the visit short, so neither your children nor your co-workers tire of it.
