How often should you talk about job performance with your manager? At least once a quarter, says business trainer Lorinda Lewis.

If you’re clocking considerably less than that, take the initiative to change things. Don’t wait for someone else to do it, says Lewis, and then blame others for not noticing your standout work. “You are responsible for the process” of measuring yourself against the goals you set, she says.

Words to use with your manager: “Could I have 12 to 15 minutes of your time to talk about my performance? I’d love to get your feedback on what I’ve been working on.”

Tip: Asking for an off-beat amount of time increases the odds that he or she will say yes.
