Allow people to see you in an authority position. One simple way? Change the way you stand, advises Jenni Prisk, a top speaker who spent 26 years as an executive secretary.

Adopt the “speaker-ready position” when talking to others in the office, she suggests. Stand with your weight evenly distributed. Now, imagine an invisible string connecting your head to the ceiling. It keeps you from crossing one ankle over another, or shifting your weight from side to side, both of which take away from your authority.
