One reader asks, “Should I write ‘p.m.’ or ‘pm’ or ‘PM’?”

Answer: It’s always safe to go with a.m. or p.m. If you worked for a newspaper, that’s certainly the way they’d prefer you write it.

Some firms use their own internal style guides to custom-fit their needs. People in the technical industry, for example, may be accustomed to am and pm or even AM and PM, so that standard might work well for them.

Regardless of which style you use, avoid redundancies such as 12 noon or 12 midnight and 8:30 a.m. this morning. Instead, use noon, midnight and 8:30 a.m. today.
