Continuous improvement applies to people as well as products.

Take the 48 Cistercian Sisters of Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey in Wrentham, Mass. They get up every day at 3 a.m., pray until almost 8 a.m., and then start making chocolate, which they sell to sustain the abbey and their lives of “beautiful simplicity.”

A few years ago, the nuns decided to install new computers and a web-based ordering system for their Trappistine Quality Candy business. As of this spring, they’d moved to open-source software for their main web pages.

The result is better customer service, a more efficient business and more time for prayer.

Lesson: Keep improving your knowledge and skills, updating your credentials and adapting your professional life to its best effect.
