Pump up creativity by scheduling a group innovation strategy session, even if it means coming in on a weekend or setting aside a few hours a week, recommends Rowan Gibson, co-author of Innovation to the Core. Let discussions play out and reward effort with, say, extra vacation time, a prized parking space or a spot on the development team.

Setting aside a few hours a week–even over lunch hours– is a good idea, if it’s a nice day and the meeting could be held outside w/ bag lunches.
But I think asking employees to come in on the weekend is the opposite of a good leadership and a bad ” team building” idea ( it could mean employees must find childcare)
I think whenever possible weekends should be employees’ personal time (unless it’s travel to a conference, etc). I always found after working over the weekend that, even if I didn’t mind at the time, I felt “off” the following week because all my errands/laundry etc backed up. I need a weekend for change of pace and to recharge.
That doesn’t mean you couldn’t assign some weekend challenge to “think creatively” about certain problems or goals and share your ideas in a brainstorming session during the following workweek.
