Randy Pausch was a leader in digital games, achieving early tenure at the University of Virginia and moving to Carnegie Mellon University, where he pioneered a path for students to build games. He also found a berth in industry as a vice president at Electronic Arts, developer of The Sims.

But Pausch may best be remembered for his contribution to the “last lecture” series at Carnegie Mellon. Fighting liver cancer, he learned he had a few months to live before giving this now-famous talk last fall.

  • Anything’s possible. Pausch achieved most of his childhood dreams and notes that as you grow older, enabling the dreams of others is even more rewarding. “That’s something we should not lose sight of,” he said, “that the inspiration and the permission to dream is huge.”
